Roughout Leathers

ROUGHOUT LEATHER While leathers come in a variety of colors and finishes, roughout leathers are one of the most unique and durable options out there. Red Wing Heritage uses a number of roughout leathers in our men’s and women’s footwear to create distinctive styles that will withstand the test of time.

WHAT IS ROUGHOUT?

Roughout leathers are fashioned simply by using the reverse side of a full-grain leather hide. The grain structure remains intact and is not severed or compromised.

ROUGHOUT V. SUEDE

Suede is made by splitting a hide in half, creating a thinner material with a more refined texture. Roughout leathers preserve the full substance and durability of the material by keeping the dense grain structure fully intact resulting in a beautiful variation of nap.

DURABILITY

Roughout leather is resistant to scuffs and marks, and since the grain side of the leather is not exposed, it provides a natural barrier to the elements. Because of this feature, it requires less overall upkeep while providing uncompromising quality.

MOHAVE — Mohave is a premium, waterproof roughout leather originally designed to withstand the harshest field conditions. Its outer appearance provides texture, character and durability. Mohave provides excellent water repellency and superior stain resistance.

Olive Mohave

MULESKINNER — As the name implies, this leather has the trademark toughness and durability of Red Wing quality leather. Muleskinner leather is highlighted with a burnished look with a visual texture and great appeal. There is an art to achieving this distinctive color, and it possesses a high degree of utility.

ABILENE — While other tanneries employ a process of splitting and thinning hides to create the rough surface, Abilene uses unsplit, heavyweight leather with proprietary tanning processes to give it a unique, rough texture. In contrast, the soft, supple interior creates a natural, breathable lining for the foot.

Cream Abiliene

ACAMPO — is a roughout leather that is made with a special soft retan formula to create a softer feeling leather. A coat of oil is then added to the leather to give it toughness and durability. This leather family is a great blend of the buttery soft hand feel mixed with the longevity of a resilient wearing article.

OIl-tanned & Smooth-finished leathers

OIL-TANNED LEATHER is water, stain and perspiration resistant. The natural look and feel is derived from using fewer finishing materials. Oil tanned leather is exceptionally durable and has been used to build countless boots throughout Red Wing’s history over the last century.

SMOOTH-FINISHED LEATHERS have polished surface that enhances the true beauty and quality of the leather. Only the most premium, top-quality hides are used to craft smooth-finished leathers. The result is a beautiful, classic-looking leather used to build more elegant styles.

LEGACY — An oiled full-grain leather made from heavyweight U.S. cattle hides and has a soft, mellow temper and excellent surface feel. It is water, stain and perspiration resistant, and its natural appearance means nature’s beauty marks remain visible.
